So, If you are after a photograph where the background is blurred, and your subject is clear you will need the largest aperture possible. Put your camera on aperture priority and select the lowest aperture number you camera will allow. Normally about F5.6 on lower end cameras. Your shutter speed should select itself automatically.

If you want everything to be sharp and clear you will need to set a smaller aperture (bigger F Stop)
REMEMBER, THE SMALLER THE NUMBER, THE BIGGER THE APERTURE
